Aberdeen and the North-East remain as key locations for the deals market in both Scotland and the UK.
Once again Scottish Business Insider and CMS are hosting a business breakfast focusing on the climate for deal making in the North-East of Scotland on March 3rd.
The event, now in its seventh year, welcomes over 250 business professionals from across the country to the Mercure Ardoe House Hotel for an informative morning with ample networking opportunities throughout.
The annual event takes the temperature of the transactions market providing insight and notable views from members of the dealmaking community in the North-East of Scotland, the central belt and much further afield.
The event is sure to attract the interests of deals professionals working both within the area and well beyond it.
- As the wider international economic environment clarifies our Deals and Dealmakers Business Breakfast will look at the prospects for the transactions market in the year ahead.
- The event will look at how the speakers expect the oil price environment will move and its implications for deals in 2020.
- We will look at the prospects for greater consolidation in the burgeoning food and drink market.
- Additionally, the event will also consider how the wave of new technologies will affect the market as businesses seek to acquire new technologies by buying or merging with other businesses.
Journalist / TV presenter
Rona Dougall is an accomplished journalist and experienced television presenter based in Edinburgh. She began her career in the Radio Forth newsroom, before becoming Scotland Correspondent for Sky News. During her 16 years there she covered many headline stories, including the Dunblane massacre, the trial of the Lockerbie bomber at Camp Zeist in the Netherlands, the death of Princess Diana from Balmoral, the opening of the Scottish parliament and several Scottish elections.
Rona was also part of the British BAFTA award winning team which covered the terrorist attack at Glasgow airport. She has been the presenter of Scottish Television’s flagship politics and current affairs programme “Scotland Tonight” since it began in 2011. Rona chairs discussions with guests in the studio, as well as interviewing big names from the worlds of politics and showbusiness – from Donald Trump to Ricky Gervais.
She is also a guest presenter on BBC Radio Scotland
SCF International Partner
Prior to becoming an International Partner of SCF, Colin Welsh served as Head of International Energy Investment Banking at Simmons & Company International (“Simmons”).
Colin joined Simmons in 1999 and built the firm’s activities outside of North America from offices in Aberdeen, London and Dubai.
Simmons & Company International was sold to Piper Jaffray (NYSE: PJC) in February 2016. In that period up to 2016 the firm completed just over $20billion of transactions.
Before joining Simmons & Company he spent 16 years at Ernst and Whinney, Touche Rose and RMD.
His current investment and management responsibilities include chairing two of Aberdeen’s largest service companies - Centurion Group and Score Group (which was acquired last month by SCF Partners).
He also sits on the board of several other companies both in Aberdeen and Australia.
Assistant Director, Dow Schofield Watts
Melanie established Dow Schofield Watts Corporate Finance (Aberdeen) in 2017 (formerly named Hall Morrice Corporate Finance Limited) alongside Tom Faichnie. She is an ICAS qualified Chartered Accountant specialising in Corporate Finance.
Prior to DSW, Melanie worked with KPMG, Simmons and Company and RSM where she gained a wide range of deal experience across a diverse range of sectors advising business owners, management teams and private equity investors.
Melanie specialises in M&A advisory, buy-side support and financial due diligence. She has strong skills in financial modelling and is responsible for building and maintaining bespoke financial models for a number of clients across various sectors.
She has been recognised as Scottish Accountant of the Year at the Business Insider Scottish Accountancy and Finance Awards 2018, Rising Star at the Northern Star Business Awards 2018 and an ICAS Top 100 Young CA 2018 and 2019.
Corporate Partner, CMS Aberdeen
Frank Fowlie is a corporate partner in the Aberdeen office and heads up the corporate team in Scotland for CMS.
Frank has extensive experience in all aspects of corporate work including mergers and acquisitions in the energy space including oil and gas service companies, upstream oil and gas companies and renewable projects together with cross-border transactions, reorganisations, restructurings, joint ventures and start-ups.
During the last 12 months Frank has been involved in key transactions in the upstream oil & gas, oilfield services and renewables sectors, including the sale by ConocoPhillips to Chyrsaor its UK business for $2.675bn – one of the largest transactions in Scotland in 2019.
The CMS corporate team in Aberdeen had a strong 2019 across the board in deals, including Helen Machin acting for Reactive Technologies Limited in its eight digit series C funding round, BGF on its growth capital investments in Dundee based mobile app developer Waracle Limited, Linton Investments on its acquisition of oil field services company Centrifuges Un-Limited and Duncan and Todd in its acquisition of nine branches from optometrist Black & Lizars.
Senior Director - Structured Finance, Clydesdale Bank
Sheila is currently a Senior Director in Clydesdale Bank’s Structured Finance team. She is now based in Aberdeen, but her career in corporate banking extends over 30 years across the UK.
After qualifying as a Chartered Banker and then following this up with an MBA, her early career was based in the City of London in roles involved in major corporate syndicated transactions. She then joined RBS, initially in a credit role and then in corporate relationship management with some time spent in both Reading and Birmingham supporting mid-market corporates across a range of sectors.
In 2008, she moved back to her home town where she joined Clydesdale Bank. Since then she has been involved in relationship management of the bank’s mid-market customers across the region, supporting their investment and acquisition activity, as well as originating new opportunities. Her current role focuses on managing the bank’s PE-backed portfolio as well as new-to-bank leveraged transactions.
